NEIGHBORHOOD QUALITY OF LIFE STUDY
 
ICF Macro is seeking field staff for the Neighborhood Quality of Life Study (NQLS). Macro has been contracted by leading researchers in physical activity measurement from San Diego State University to collect a variety of data related to the built environment, including land use, “walkability,” commercial establishments, recreational space, and park amenities. The study will assess five jurisdictions in the state of Maryland- Howard Co., Montgomery Co., Prince George’s Co., Baltimore Co. and Baltimore City. 
 
The NQLS data collection will begin immediately following a training in early July and will continue for approximately 4-6 weeks, and potentially beyond.    If you have an interest in working outdoors and can commit yourself for the duration of the project, you may wish to apply for the NQLS Field Rater position. This is an opportunity to be involved in an important study on a topic of wide-ranging importance.  NOTE: This position is NOT recommended for students enrolled in summer courses that require class attendance during the day.
 
RESPONSIBILITIES:
·         Walk along pre-determined routes and record observations about land use, walkability, etc. using a computerized survey instrument
·         Walk along paved/unpaved trails through parks and record observations about available amenities and their condition using a computerized survey instrument
·         Report to the Supervisor daily on study activities
·         Review completion of data prior to submitting data
·         Report to Macro’s office in Calverton on a weekly basis to drop off data and receive new assignments
·         Participate in team meetings, as necessary
·         Respond to questions from neighbors/park-goers about your activities
·         Submit weekly expense reports

 EXPERIENCE PREFERRED:
·         College graduate preferred. Ideal for graduate students able to work during the day and having no travel limitations in these areas
·         Ability to read a map and navigate accordingly
·         Computer skills including, but not limited to, working on a laptop/Tablet PC and familiarity with Microsoft Access
·         Prior experience in environmental/neighborhood observation also helpful
 
PERSONAL ATTRIBUTES REQUIRED:
·         Able to lift, carry, and transport up to 15 lbs of equipment
·         Capable of walking multiple miles per day with up to 15 lbs of equipment
·         Able to cover large area of various terrain on foot
·         Eagerness to work in an outdoor setting on summer days
·         Personable and professional demeanor
·         Punctual and able to adhere to strict time schedules
·         Well-organized
 
WHEN:  The NQLS training will occur from July 7 - July 10, 2009 in Calverton, MDAssuming acceptable performance during, and the successful completion of, training you may expect to work between 4-6 weeks after the completion of training. Some data collection may occur beyond this timeframe.   
 
PAYMENT: You may expect to earn $360 for attendance at the Field Raters’ training.  You may also expect to earn between $480- $600 per week based on the successful completion of weekly assignments. For use of your car, you will be reimbursed at the prevailing Federal reimbursement rate, which is currently $.55 per mile. You will not be required to travel away from your home for any overnight stays for data collection.
